Sky is set to leave the FTSE 100 this week after Comcast prevailed over Rupert Murdoch’s Twenty-First Century Disney will be expected to bolster Sky with its considerable heft in TV and film production, although Sky is a serious producer in its own right as the maker of shows including Riviera and Fortitude. There may be more to it than that, of course, and even in the US, Comcast and Disney have working relationships and deals in place. But in the case of Sky in the UK, it has a deal in place for a dedicated Sky Disney channel on the firm’s movies platform, and that contract is apparently not due to expire until some point in 2020. Sky’s deal with Netflix suggests that the satellite TV firm is worried about going it alone in the streaming market, which is itself becoming increasingly fragmented.
